July Weather Highlights

      July Weather Highlights

      • Best Overall Regions: Pacific Northwest, higher elevations of the Rockies and Sierra Nevada
      • Most Consistently Comfortable States: Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, Maine
      • Least Comfortable Regions: Gulf Coast, Deep South, Midwest Corn Belt
      • Dominant Pattern: July is the most geographically selective month of the year for comfortable weather. Summer heat dominates the central and eastern U.S., leaving only the Pacific Northwest, high-elevation West, and far northern states as reliable destinations for comfortable outdoor conditions. Elevation becomes the single most important factor in July comfort.

Why These Areas Rank Well

The top performing areas in July share a common advantage — they can consistently moderate summer heat through a combination of elevation, marine influence, and lower humidity. Lower humidity, elevation-driven cooler mornings, and frequent clear-sky days keep comfort scores high even when afternoon temperatures run warm.

Oregon leads the nation in July. Much of the state benefits from moderate temperatures, low humidity, and reduced storm frequency. Coastal influences and higher terrain limit extreme heat while interior valleys remain more comfortable than comparable regions farther south.

Washington follows closely, particularly western and mountainous areas where cooler marine air and elevation maintain favorable summer conditions.

Idaho and high-elevation areas of California — particularly the Sierra Nevada around Lake Tahoe — deliver consistently comfortable July conditions thanks to cooler nights and low humidity.

July is the peak month for mountain national parks. Yellowstone and the surrounding high-elevation areas of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho are among the most comfortable destinations in the country. Rocky Mountain National Park and Yosemite also offer excellent high-elevation conditions, though afternoon thunderstorms are common at elevation — typically brief and offset by otherwise comfortable temperatures.

What This Means for Travel Planning

July requires the most strategic destination choice of any month. High-elevation areas of the West and the Pacific Northwest are the clear winners. Outside of these regions, summer heat becomes increasingly difficult to avoid — particularly at lower elevations and east of the Rockies.
