How the Cycling Weather Index Works

The Cycling Weather Index scores each U.S. city from 1 to 10 using National Weather Service NDFD forecast data at 2.5km resolution, updated every morning. Six weather factors are scored and combined into a single composite number that reflects what conditions actually feel like for a ride. Wind carries the strongest weight — headwinds above 14 mph can turn any route into a slog regardless of other conditions.

🌡️ Temperature Peak score at 55–75°F. Cyclists generate heat, so cooler temperatures score best.
💨 Wind (most critical) Scores drop sharply above 14 mph. Headwinds ruin rides more than almost any other factor.
⛅ Cloud Cover Clear and partly cloudy both score well. Heavy overcast gets a mild penalty.
💧 Humidity Low dewpoint scores highest. Muggy conditions penalized for comfort and exertion.
🌂 Rain Chance Above 30% probability begins to significantly lower scores.
🌧️ Precipitation Any meaningful rainfall lowers the score substantially. Scored on days 1–3 only.

A score of 10 means near-perfect cycling conditions. A score of 1 means conditions are poor — too cold, too windy, or too wet for a comfortable ride. The index covers the contiguous United States with 37,000+ city data points.
