How the Cycling Weather Index Works

The Cycling Weather Index scores each location from 1 to 10 using National Weather Service forecast data at 2.5km resolution across the contiguous United States. It is updated daily and reflects conditions most cyclists describe as ideal for a ride.

Six factors are scored and combined:

🌡️ Temperature Peak score at 55–75°F. Cyclists generate heat so cooler temperatures score best.
💨 Wind Most critical variable. Scores drop sharply above 14 mph — headwinds ruin rides.
⛅ Cloud Cover Clear and partly cloudy both score well. Heavy overcast penalized.
💧 Humidity Low dewpoint = higher score. Muggy conditions penalized.
🌂 Rain Chance Above 30% chance begins to significantly lower scores.
🌧️ Precipitation Any meaningful QPF lowers the score substantially.

A score of 10 means near-perfect cycling conditions. A score of 1 means conditions are poor — too cold, too windy, or too wet for a comfortable ride.
